About Active Solar Heating
Active solar refers to
technologies, which change solar energy into
usable heat, or that creates air-movement for
ventilation or cooling, or the storage of heat
for future use, with the aid of electrical or
mechanical equipment including pumps and fans.
Passive solar energy systems do not use external
energy, such as a solar chimney.
Most solar water heating systems are active
solar heating as they utilize pumps, or fans to
circulate water, or air through solar
collectors. Solar water heating systems that are
based on the thermosiphon are passive systems as
they use an arrangement of siphon tubes to aid
in the circulation of the water or air.
Even though passive solar systems require no
additional energy to operate, and have little to
no maintenance costs, active solar-thermal
systems, can still produce higher solar savings
than passive. This is due to the greatly
enhanced heat transfer and transport provided by
active solar systems.
